For adolescents, handling their emotions when faced with problems can be challenging for they undergo a transition in becoming adults (Spinks, 2014). Although there are plenty of researches that examined the adolescents’ emotions and ways to handle problems, however, these data do not locally describe the experience of the Cebuano adolescents. To address this need, this study focuses on emotional state and coping strategies among adolescents in selected sitios Barangan Labangon, Cebu City. There are 119 respondents in the study: 47 are from Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) and 72 are non-4Ps beneficiaries. Six purposively selected adolescents for FGDs. Tools used are expert-made survey questionnaires: the DASS-21 and a COPE. Results of the study imply that adolescents experience a mild to moderate range of anxiety and depression. Furthermore, they show that there is a significant relationship between the following variables: Depression and Relaxation: Anxiety and Developing Social Support: Anxiety and Seeking Professional Support; and Stress and ICF. Lastly, the results also assent that the adolescents’ socio-economic status mediates the association between depression and relaxation. Based on the results, an intervention program entitled, the Lamp of Hope: Breaking Darkness, Bringing the Light, is proposed.
